Probiotics, Why Your Health Depends On Them

How often have you heard the expression “You are what you eat”? Of course most people will assume that refers to weight but it also applies to how healthy you are. There’s no question health is determined at the dinner table but according to the renowned Bacteriologist, Professor Ilya Mechnikov “death begins in the colon”.
    Let me explain.

In order to achieve optimum health we need

    Fresh Air
    Pure Clean Water
    Quality Nutrition

However, the majority of us lack good nutrition and even those who do consume the best nutrients in the world often cannot digest and assimilate them. Why?

Well, most of us have a bacteria imbalance and that has much to do with what we eat.

We’ve all heard the expression “balanced diet” and that actually consists of 20 per cent acid forming foods and 80 per cent alkali-forming foods. The scientific reason for this is that the loss of alkali from your body is four times as great as acid.

Alkali forming foods include all vegetables, salads, fresh fruits except cranberries and plums, almonds and milk.

Acid forming foods comprise all animal proteins like meat, fish, shellfish, eggs, cheese, poultry, nuts (except almonds), sugars, and all cereal foods and starches including bread and flour.

Understandably most of us prefer the acid forming foods and so do bad bacteria.
Your digestive tract stretches from your mouth to your anus and is full of bacteria. If you were to stretch out your intestines they would cover half a tennis court so you can tell we are talking millions here.

The ideal ratio of good to bad bacteria in the gut is 85:15. That’s 85% good (probiotic) and 15% bad (pathogenic). Most people have it the other way round.
How do you think you fare?

Probiotics are the first line of defence of the immune system. They are responsible for

providing essential enzymes to make nutrients available to the body
    cleaning up cholesterol
    manufacturing B vitamins
cleaning out the lower bowels of encrusted matter
    destroying bad bacteria
    eliminating toxins from the body.

Bacteria have no teeth. They produce enzymes which identify, digest and deliver nutrients to where they need to go. As enzymes are responsible for every metabolic process in your body you can well understand why probiotics are so essential.

There are many factors which upset the bacteria balance besides food. These anti-probiotics include

    Antibiotics,
    Birth control pills,
    Steroids/ Hormonal drugs
    Fluoride
    Chlorine
    Coffee/Tea
    Carbonated drinks
    Man made vitamins
    Synthetic ascorbic acid
    Radiation
    Stress
    Preservative
    Additives
    Pesticides
    Fertilisers

When you suffer low quantities of probiotic bacteria your immune system is severely compromised and you are likely to have health issues. If your intestines are blocked or polluted then your body will be diseased in some way and remember you have a lot of intestines to keep clean.

There are many probiotic formulations on the market today but the problem with most of them is that they don’t have sufficient variety to do any good. Some need nutrients generated by the others in order to perform their tasks. Most people don’t realise this.

More importantly each of their food sources need to be present so the probiotic bacteria will live in harmony and not kill each other off. This is important because the strongest bacteria will kill off the weakest ones especially when competing for food. The whole point of taking probiotics is to kill off pathogens, not each other.

In modern society taking probiotics is a must. However, you need to ensure the ones you take are active. Many formulations will state the amount of probiotics at the time of manufacture but unless they have a food source these start to die off immediately so the amount you actually receive when you take them could be significantly less. Read the labels.

If you aspire to good health you must care for your bowels. Think health, think probiotics!

Most people have heard of antibiotics and how you have to take them when you get sick, but how many people know what Probiotics are? They are actually dietary supplements of live yeasts or good bacteria that have been said to be useful and healthy for the body. There is a group of collective microbes and microorganisms that consistently live in the human body and is called Flora. Stress, bad eating, and toxicity are only a few things that destroy this helpful community of microorganisms.

There are at least ten times more bacteria cells in and on the body than regular human cells. There are good and obviously bad bacteria in the body and there must be a balance. Again, all of these microbes make up the Flora of the body. They are found in your mouth, nose, small intestines, on your skin and mainly in your large intestine. The good bacteria in your intestines are there to break down nutrients that the body cannot digest and send them on their way out the colon. However, everyone knows about the bad microorganisms in the colon, E-Coli. The intestinal bacterium also synthesizes vitamins and folic acid. It is important for the good bacteria to remain in the body so it can inhibit the growth of pathogenic germs which can cause disease.

Many things we come in contact with everyday can destroy the good bacteria in our bodies. This results in the bad bacteria taking over and causing illness and disease. The first destroyer is stress which causes the brain to create chemicals that not only start killing good bacteria but will shut down the immune system as well. Excessive alcohol intake and exposure to toxic substances can also lower the good flora as well. Some major toxic substances people come in contact with and don’t realize the harm it’s doing include Fluoride which destroys the enzymes Flora creates, Mercury and Lead. And even worse, excess iron which allows free radicals to convert healthy cells to cancer cells, contributes to heart disease, and damages the liver and other organs. Smoking, inadequate sleep, overeating, and dehydration are also causes of a loss of good bacteria in the body.

With all of these outside objects killing the good flora in our bodies, it’s important to replace them. Fruits and vegetables can assist with this as long as they are raw. The enzymes you want from the vegetables are demolished if cooked because they die at 118 degrees Celsius. Some people may need to take supplements to get what they need. I-Flora by Sedona Labs is a 16 strain supplement that increases the natural flora in your body to support digestive, immune and overall health.

Making sure you have enough microflora in your body by taking Probiotics can have numerous health benefits. It has been said that it can help prevent colon cancer, lower cholesterol, improve immune function and prevent infections. Probiotics can also help reduce inflammation, and prevent harmful bacteria that grow under stress. Find a supplement now to promote overall good health!

You may have heard the term Probiotic from friends and family but never knew what it was. In this article we will discuss good bacteria and its benefits to the body, who may need to supplement probiotics in their diet and where to find them. For those who have never heard of probiotics, this term is given to bacteria found in our intestinal tract also known as friendly bacteria.

The human gastrointestinal tract houses more than 400 different live beneficial bacteria. Among these good bacteria include L. acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum, the two most abundant friendly bacteria found in the gastrointestinal tract must keep balance with bad bacteria such as E.coli or your health starts to decline. If you suspect you have a problem in your GI tract, some of the health problems you may be experiencing are poor digestion, headaches, and intestinal yeast an overgrowth of the bacteria candida albacans which can make life unpleasant.

    L. Acidophilus produces acidphilin, lactic acid, and hydrogen peroxide which together produce an antimicrobial agent in the GI tract which fight against foreign environmental borne pathogens. This effect also enhances the immune system as well as boost the digestion of foods, help alleviate digestive disorders, help prevent bad breath, enhance the synthesis (production) of B vitamins, help with calcium absorption, help as an anti-tumor and anti-cancer agent, help in the digestion of dairy products like milk, and fight against excess yeast growth such as candida.

The benefits of acidophilus, bifidus, and other probiotics to maintain proper GI health have been demonstrated by the scientific community for several years now. If your digestive system is in poor health, this poor GI condition can further reduce the levels of acidophilus and supplementation is required to restore your system to proper health.

If you have ever suffered from candida, you know with out a doubt that probiotic supplementation is a must. By supplementing with a good probiotic one can stop yeast over growth, boost the immune system, and rebuild their GI bacteria. The fastest way to destroy probiotics in the intestinal tract is by taking an antibiotic. In the past few years, doctors have been over prescribing antibiotics for every little sniffle and cold, even those with a yeast infection in the GI tract. Antibiotics are great for fighting bacteria and in some cases you just can not get around taking one; but the use of an antibiotic will destroy all the probiotics in your GI tract. Research has determined that 70% of your immune system resides in your intestinal tract, by taking an antibiotic you can knock out your immune system if you do not restore it with a good probiotic supplement. In North America, environmental toxins, food toxins, and a high stress life style can reduce the probiotic population in your GI tract as well. Note: if you are currently on an antibiotic do not take your probiotic at the same time that you take your prescribed antibiotic. The antibiotic will destroy the probiotic. Allow 2 – 3 hours between applications. If you consume your antibiotic at 12noon wait till 2pm or 3pm before taking your probiotic. This will help prevent the antibiotic from completely destroying all life in your intestinal tract.

There are several sources one can get probiotics from, by a food source or in supplement form found at your friendly health food store. Foods high in probiotic culture consist of natural cheeses, yogurt, kefir, and buttermilk. These are perhaps the best food sources for probiotics. Some other foods like wheat grass, spirulina, and chlorella are also rich in probiotics and are also packed with vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that can boost the immune system and help detoxify the body. For those of you who are allergic to the list of foods first mentioned (dairy), an alternative to those food sources is a good enteric coated probiotic from your friendly health food store in capsule form. Whether you choose to eat foods high in probiotics or visit your friendly health food store, getting a daily infusion of probiotics can improve your health and quality of life.

There are many definitions that people use to define exactly what probiotics are. A quick search will yield the following; that it’s a bacteria, a microorganism, a digestive tract supplement, digestive boosters as well as a multitude of other names. Truth be told, in one way shape or form they are all right.

The bottom line simply stated is that they are a microbe that will protect the user and prevent disease. Using the generic term of bacteria many of us think of bacteria as being bad and unhealthy. Some can be and some can even be deadly. So why have probiotics for dogs?

Let’s step back and understand why probiotics for dogs and certain bacteria are not only necessary, but good for dogs as well. “Friendly bacteria” that can be found inside the intestinal tract serve a major function for your dog by keeping their defenses up against illness and disease.

We call them friendly because unlike the bacteria that causes diarrhea for example, the bacteria in probiotics for dogs will defend your pet against organisms so they don’t get sick. It’s so important that this complex system of balance between the harmful and friendly bacteria is kept in check.

During the normal life cycle of our pets, their own systems do a great job of regulating this balance and preventing you might say a tug of war effect in their system. But there are many things that enter their body and cause this imbalance. That’s where dog Probiotics come into play.

Several normal occurrences that cause these imbalances during their lifetime are stress, poor or inadequate diets, all the chemicals from pesticides and fertilizers in the lawn and just plain getting old. Each of these lifetime situations may or may not cause problems but they exist and preventing them or fixing them in quick order is the most effective remedy.

So what can we expect when we use give Probiotics to our dogs? By keeping their gut in a healthy state and maintaining the correct levels of good bacteria we would expect to see a reduction in blood cholesterol levels, significant anti-oxidant activity and an increase in their energy levels.

With the good bacteria at the right levels we would also expect better digestion of their food. As dogs get older the ability of their digestive tract to properly absorb the nutrients, vitamins and vitamins necessary for a healthy body diminishes. Ever wonder why older pets have a tougher time keeping on weight even though they eat the same amount of food?

By giving probiotic supplements to dogs, the beneficial bacteria in your pets system are better equipped to fight the growth of unhealthy organisms. So, if you want to maintain your dogs healthy body then supplement their diet with a high quality pet probiotic and give your pet the chance they deserve for a long and healthy life.

Also, remember to read the label. Some but not all Probiotics for dogs require refrigeration to keep the bacteria stabilized. Above 60 degrees the good bacteria start to break down. So keep this in mind.

Probiotics are beneficial micro organisms. It has been derived from two words, ‘pro’ and ‘biota’ which mean life. Such bifido bacteria are used to treat and prevent some illnesses with food.

It fights against the disease causing bacteria such as Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, various stains of E. coli and Vibrio. These are known to cause Traveller’s Disease and other digestive problems. The general use of this  is to assist your body’s naturally occurring “gut flora”, which means they help to establish and maintain the right balance of microorganisms that exist in your stomach and intestines.

    Benefits of probiotic products are:

    • Reduce cholesterol
    • Strengthens immune system, natural defence mechanism
    • Reduce food poisoning
    • Improves digestion
    • Arrests the growth of harmful bacteria that cause digestive stress.
    • Restores the PH balance in your body
    • Treats Traveller’s disease
    • Generates protein and minerals in the body
    • Reduces yeast infection and other skin problems
    • Prevent eczema in children
    • It stabilizes the gut flora
    • Absorbs vitamins, proteins and minerals from the food products consumed.

    Foods containing bifido bacteria are:

    • Fermented and unfermented milk
    • Yogurt/curds
    • Soy milk
    • Tempeh
    • Miso
    • Sauerkraut
    • Some juices and soy beverages

When you are traveling, the most common disease you might suffer from is traveller’s disease. It is accompanied with symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, bloating etc. This can result out of consuming contaminated water or food. Bifido bacteria help treat such traveller’s diarrhea.

It brings about a balance in the good and bad bacteria. It is popular among health conscious people as they reduce cholesterol in the body. Some of them add bifido bacteria as a supplement in their diet. This is found plenty in natural food products such as fermented and unfermented milk products, yoghurt and soy milk etc. Yoghurt and other milk products must be consumed moderately.

Women who suffer from yeast and other fungal infection should make use of these bifido bacteria. Such friendly bacteria are known to allay your yeast infections. If you suffer from constipation, bifido bacteria helps reduce your symptoms of constipation and brings about good bowel movement. They assist with digestion and help protect against harmful bacteria.

It will also help replenish all lost bacteria in the body. When an individual takes antibiotics, the bacteria equilibrium often gets distorted or unbalanced as a result of the new bacteria into the body to fight infections. It is popular with people suffering from crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Irritable Bowel Syndrome – 23 Years of Gut-wrenching Pain…Gone with Probiotics

Allies and Enemies: How the World Depends on Bacteria
Some bacteria cause deadly diseases, but without bacteria, life as we know it could not exist.  This video introduces t… More >>

From the age of 20 to 43, I lived with the gut-wrenching pain of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.  Pain that sometimes brought me to the bathroom floor in cold sweats.  Pain that brought prayers in stores like, “Please, Lord, let me make it. Please, please, please.”  And emotional pain from embarrassing moments if I didn’t make it to the bathroom on time.  Prayers in the car to make it home on time or for tall corn fields.

Now for those who have never experienced that particular problem it may sound kind of funny.  But, it was far from funny for me.  It was NORMAL.

Normal because I had been told my dad had a “touchy” stomach.  Normal because the doctors gave me no hope and no remedy.  Normal sucked. Irritable Bowel Syndrome sucked!

It wasn’t until I was searching for an answer to my husband David’s myriad of health issues that I found the solution for me.  PROBIOTICS!

One simple health solution for Irritable Bowel Syndrome changed my whole life; changed my view of normal! By finding one solution, I changed 23 years of pain into a dim experience I can share with others.  Now my prayers are, “Thank you, Lord, for giving me health once again!”

    PROBIOTICS.  So what are they?

Basically intestinal bacteria can be separated into two general groups: those that benefit us and those that harm us.  That balance of beneficial bacteria and bad bacteria plays a major role in our health, both in a positive and negative way.

In Dr S.K. Dash’s book, “The Consumer’s Guide to Probiotics”, the benefits to having a good balance of good bacteria (probiotics) are:

    * Improved digestion of foods and alleviating digestive disorders.
    * Enhanced synthesis of B vitamins.
    * Protection against E. coli and other food poisoning type infections.
    * Improved lactose tolerance and digestibility of milk products.
    * Reduced risk of vaginal infection and yeast infection.
    * Improved immune function. (anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal)
    * Promoting anti-carcinogenic activity.
    * Helping to prevent peptic ulcer caused by H. pylori.
    * Preventing acne.
    * Reducing cholesterol.

In today’s culture, good probiotics are needed more than ever. Our polluted environment, food additives, tobacco smoke, stress, alcohol, chlorinated and fluoridated water, antibiotics dispensed like they were candy, and the use of many other medications(prescription and over-the-counter) can destroy the friendly bacteria in our intestines.

When the good guys are all but gone it makes the body susceptible to disease and infections.  Research shows that 40% of men and 70% of women have yeast infections to some degree resulting from poor eating habits, cortisone drugs and heavy use of antibiotics.

Last month I talked about starting to eliminate processed and refined food.  With the friendly bacteria significantly diminished, the bad bacteria have a heyday on this type of food in your gut and it just rots instead of digests and assimilates.  This significantly lowers the nutrients your getting into your system for cells to utilize.  No wonder people are low on energy and tired all the time.

So, how do we get probiotics back in to our gut?

    1. Make fermented veggie foods like sauerkraut. The book called “Wild Fermentation” has a great recipe for sauerkraut.  My mother used to make French cut beans this way called Snippled Beans.  MMmmmm good.  I’d sneak some out of the crock before she put it through the canning process which killed the beneficial bacteria unfortunately. Buying processed sauerkraut has the same problem, sour taste but no friendly bacteria.

    2. Make fermented raw milk or coconut milk foods like yogurt or kefir.  Purchased yogurts are not recommended because the processing leaves the product with very little, if any, live culture and lots of sugar added.

    3. From probiotic supplements. In purchasing probiotic supplements, one should purchase from a reputable company.  Read labels!  Always choose the highest quality possible.

    * When choosing capsules, be sure that each one contains a guaranteed count of at least 2 billion bacteria of the best specific strain.  Powdered products should contain at least 2 billion bacteria per 1/2 teaspoon amount. Consumption of probiotic supplements with two to five billion CFU(colony forming units) per day is necessary to have any chance of offering significant beneficial effects.

    * Be wary of combination powdered products that claim to have a wide variety of different bacterial species without giving a specific bacterial count.  The product may contain very little of the bacteria you want.  It is best to choose powdered products that contain only one strain.

    * Be sure the product includes the bacteria’s growth medium, like if the bacteria was grown on milk.  In lactose-intolerant or lactose-allergic individuals, milk-based products can cause problems.  However when shopping for dairy-free probiotics be aware that the US government standards allow a little leeway in labeling information which can be somewhat misleading.  There may be a legal limit of milk byproducts allowed in a product with a “diary-free” label.

Probiotic capsules are not the “quick fix” that medications are.  They are a food supplement like a vitamin-mineral supplement.

Sure, you can get vitamins and minerals in quality food.  But quality food is hard to come by in our modern culture. The kind of quality food you can get at farmer’s markets; organic fruit and vegetables, grass fed beef, free range chickens, no processing.  Soil nutrients have been farmed out of most mass produced crops.  Farmers now use processed fertilizers to put in the soil and not organic compost from animals that returns the nutrients in the soil that the plants can take up.

In past years, probiotics were eaten in the form of fermented foods like real unprocessed yogurt, kefir and sauerkraut or kimchi.  People had gardens and ate the vegetables right from the plant often times without rinsing it off.

Probiotics in capsules are the supplement you can take if you don’t make fermented foods or like the sour taste of fermented foods.  They are not a medication.  They fix the problem instead of cover it up.  They bring back the friendly bacteria to be the guardians of your gut.

My brother and sister-in-law have just had some marvellous news. They are going to be grand parents, not once but twice. That means I’m going to be a great aunt – hopefully, literally!

The pregnancies whilst welcome were unexpected. It has always been accepted by his parents my nephew would never be a dad – at least not intentionally. My niece, on the other hand, has always wanted to be a mother, especially since her marriage. However, she had Cancer as a child and was warned motherhood might not be easy so her recent news is particularly pleasing.

I’m sure my relations will make wonderful parents. They are sensible with drink, don’t smoke or take drugs and are fit and active. They also eat healthily, but I’m willing to bet they don’t take probiotics every day. Not many people do, so for the sake of my unborn great nieces or nephews I’m going to explain to them why they should. I wish I’d had an auntie who’d told me about them.

Probiotics, for those who don’t already know, are good friendly bacteria, and incase you’re now wondering why anyone would possibly want to eat bacteria, it’s because they are good for your health. Correction, they are essential for your health.

Whether you like it or not, bacteria live inside every one of you, and stretch from your mouth to your anus. Infact, you have more bacteria in your body than cells. Depending on which research you read, almost 85% of your immunity is found in your gut, and we all know a good immune system is essential if you want to be healthy.

Our genes are responsible for our appearance and characteristics, and our immune system is partly determined by our parents. If the mother breast-feeds she can pass on some of her own immunity to her offspring, something not possible with formulated milk. It is vital, therefore, all pregnant mothers realise the importance of having strong gut flora to pass on but to give the baby a boost you can put some probiotics on your nipples. If you choose to bottle-feed your child you should introduce probiotics to the baby within the formulated milk.

Probiotics are food. When a woman is pregnant her own immune system is naturally suppressed so it’s important she take probiotics to feed both herself and the baby growing inside her.

When a child is first born, his or her gut is sterile and needs to be populated by bacteria. There are two types, probiotic that are the beneficial ones, and the pathogenic ones, which you really don’t want too many of. The ratio of good to bad should be 85:15. Most people get it the other way round. This compromises their immune system preventing appropriate responses to the many environmental insults to which our modern society is exposed.

Unfortunately, with each generation our immune system gets weaker, and you might have noticed a marked increase in childhood disorders such as allergies, asthma, eczema, diabetes and hay fever. My specific interest is in the area of autistic spectrum disorders and ADHD. When my son was diagnosed with autism in 1993 the rate was approximately 1:2500, now in 2008 it’s 1:100.

If you have sufficient of the right kind of bacteria, your body will be protected from unwanted invaders. Toxins can be grabbed, neutralised, and removed. Importantly, you will be able to absorb the maximum amount of nutrients from your food. It doesn’t matter how good the food you eat is if you can’t absorb it. Having your gut populated by bad bacteria prevents food being broken down properly. When undigested particles get into your blood they cause all sorts of symptoms, and when undigested food remains in your body it produces all sorts of toxins as it rots and putrefies.

Until the invention of the refrigerator, the human race was very good at naturally getting daily probiotic bacteria. Food was eaten fresh and grains, vegetables or fruit, contained healthy probiotics, as the fertilisers, pesticides, insecticides and herbicides, which were introduced after the Second World War, hadn’t killed them off.

Any food left over was preserved, and the way this was done was by means of fermentation. Some foods are still prepared in this way, i.e. yoghurt and sauerkraut, but how many people do you know who eat these every day? Wine and some beer is also fermented which is why drinking in moderation can be considered beneficial.

Also, until relatively recently we weren’t obsessed with sterilising everything and using anti-bacterial products. Soap, water and a bit of elbow grease worked fine. Anti-bacterial sprays, wipes, etc kill bacteria. Unfortunately, they kill ALL bacteria, both good and bad so how is anyone ever expected to build a good immune system? Ever heard the expression “A bit of dirt never hurt anyone”? Even a healthy person needs some pathogenic bacteria, just not too much. The way to keep it under control is to listen to Nature and fight like with like.

Fortunately people are slowly beginning to re-introduce probiotic bacteria into their diets. Good bacteria deal with all the bad stuff and keep the pathogenic strains under control. So how do you get it?

You will find all manner of formulations on the supermarket shelves. You can get powders, capsules, drinks, and yoghurts with manufacturers making all sorts of claims as to their possible benefits and potency. It’s confusing.

However, replenishing your probiotic bacteria on a daily basis is essential because many different things including antibiotics, stress, pollution, chemicals, dental work, prescribed medication, contraceptive pills, and old age (to name just a few) destroy them.

If the probiotic bacteria are wiped out it provides a window of opportunity for pathogenic bacteria to flourish, and these are a major source of toxins in the body. Infact, it has been estimated 80% of toxins in the blood comes from the gut and since your blood nourishes your whole body it’s not surprising many of us don’t feel as well as we should.
