Pro-Lab Incorporated WQ105 Complete Household Water Quality Test KitThe H Pylori bacteria is the main bacteria responsible for causing the ulcers affecting the gastrointestinal tracts in humans. Studies conducted by a prominent health institution in the United States indicate that over 20% of the individuals under the age of 40 in the country have the H. pylori bacteria in their system. The study further points out that, (approximately) half the population of the United States above the age of 60 is infected by this strain of bacteria. However, even with this high incidence of the infection, most individuals infected with the H Pylori show no signs of the infection or develop ulcers.
The primary mode of transmission of this infection is through water and food. Traces of the H Pylori bacteria can also be found in the human saliva. So it is possible to spread the infection via activities such as kissing.
Infection and Ulcers caused by the H Pylori Bacteria
Infection-
The H. Pylori takes advantage of the acidic nature of our stomachs (due to the presence of the stomach acids) and works by gradually destroying the lining that protects the small intestines and the stomach tissue from developing a low pH. As the protective lining gradually erodes, the H Pylori infects the stomach tissue and causes a sore. In addition, this strain of bacteria is able to survive in the acidic environment of the stomach by neutralizing the acidity via enzyme secreted by the bacteria itself. This enables the H. pylori bacteria to burrow into the stomach lining and infecting the stomach and the small intestines.
Ulcers-
The H Pylori bacteria is one of the key contributors for a peptic ulcer. A peptic ulcer is a sore found in the stomach tissue or the duodenum. Initially, it was believed that stress and food cause ulcers and sores in the stomach. But studies have shown that there are many factors such as medications, cancer and the bacterial infection that actually cause stomach ulcers.
H Pylori – Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment
Symptoms- In most cases patients remain totally asymptomatic. However common symptoms of this infection include excruciating pain in the abdominal area, and ulcers.
Diagnosis-
Diagnosis of the bacterial infection is conducted through, stool, breath, blood and tissue tests. The blood test is the most common and widely prescribed test for the H pylori infection. However in severe cases of the infection, physicians may even do a stool and tissue test.
Treatment
Primarily, antibiotics along with medications to lower the level of stomach acid are prescribed by the physicians to treat the infection. In addition H2 blockers and the proton pump inhibitors are also used to check the stomach acid level. All of these medications help the protective lining of the stomach tissue to heal and provide relief to the patients from the ulcers and sores.
